Anthropic Backers: Pre-IPO Wealth Accumulation

Early and late-stage investors in the AI giant hold stakes valued in the billions prior to its anticipated public listing.

Anthropic is on track to complete its initial public offering later this year, a move that is projected to value the artificial intelligence laboratory at as much as $2 trillion. While the full realization of that valuation will occur upon listing, the stakes held by prominent venture capitalists and early backers already command billions of dollars in value based on the company’s most recent private market assessment of $965 billion.

According to data reported by Bloomberg, the financial gains for these investors are substantial even before the anticipated market debut. The composition of these holdings varies significantly, ranging from early-stage seed investments to massive late-stage capital injections, yet each position reflects the rapid appreciation of the leading AI firm since its founding.

Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive of Google, represents one of the most notable early positions. Schmidt participated in Anthropic’s Series A round in 2021, entering the company when its valuation stood at $461 million. PitchBook data indicates that Schmidt currently holds approximately one percent of the company. At the current private valuation, this minority stake is worth nearly $10 billion.

In contrast, Iconiq Capital made a significant late-stage entry into the company’s cap table. Last year, the investment firm contributed $6 billion to Anthropic at a time when the company was already valued at $183 billion. This substantial investment has since grown to a value of $17 billion, with analysts suggesting the position could double its worth once the IPO is completed.

Menlo Ventures has maintained a long-term commitment to the AI lab, leading the company’s Series D financing round. Over the course of its involvement, the venture capital firm has invested more than $1 billion into Anthropic. That cumulative investment now translates to a stake valued at $14 billion under the latest private market prices.

Sequoia Capital joined the investor roster more recently, making its first investment in the company earlier this year. At the time of entry, Anthropic was valued at $380 billion. Sequoia committed $3 billion to the deal, securing approximately one percent ownership. This move has already resulted in the firm more than doubling its initial investment, a testament to the continued upward trajectory of the company’s valuation.

Sound Ventures, a firm co-founded by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, has also accumulated a significant position. The firm initially invested $35 million during Anthropic’s 2023 Series C round. Subsequently, Sound Ventures funneled an additional $400 million into the company. These combined contributions have resulted in a stake worth billions of dollars. Notably, Kutcher departed Sound Ventures this year to establish a new venture capital firm.

Spark Capital holds a unique distinction as the only venture capital firm known to occupy a board seat at Anthropic. The firm invested $75 million during the same 2023 Series C round, which took place when the company’s valuation was $5 billion. Since that time, Spark Capital’s position has expanded more than ninetyfold, reaching a current value of $7 billion.

As Anthropic prepares for its public listing, these figures illustrate the magnitude of returns available to those who backed the company at various stages of its growth. The anticipated windfall for these investors underscores the broader market confidence in the AI sector’s leading players, setting the stage for what is expected to be one of the largest technology listings of the year.
